Canberra Islamic Centre

Canberra Islamic Centre

The design has been inspired by a careful analysis of traditional design elements from various parts of the Islamic world and incorporates decorative arches, formal gateways, vaults over pathways, domes for light, open courtyards and fountains. Symmetry of design and geometric patterned decoration underline its Islamic foundations.

The Centre has been oriented to serve its religious and cultural purposes it has also been sited to take advantage of the northerly aspect and the solar energy efficiencies and lighting opportunities this orientation offers in Australia.

Australian materials and construction techniques will be used in the development but the extent to which the centre has been adapted to and integrated with the local environment is best expressed in the landscape design principles.

The overall landscape character of the site is intended to be created by the use of native Australian trees within a dry land grassed setting. Formal plantings of deciduous trees are proposed also on the main pedestrian pathway and within the courtyard space. These are intended to provide seasonal variations in colour and the play of light and shade are expected to make the spaces more interesting.

The Canberra Islamic Centre promises to provide a distinctive expression of Islamic religion and culture in Australia. It will be a focus for the Islamic communities throughout Australia in practical terms while providing a memorable symbol of Islam in Australia’s National Capital.
